History group goes Egyptian!

The History Group is back after its summer break and our first meeting drew a large audience gathering with new members joining us.
We meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 2.00pm at Central Methodist Church, Hucknall.
On Wednesday 16th October we will be welcoming the historian and writer Frank Earp as our speaker.
Can you write your name in hieroglyphics? At our September meeting Maureen brought along some strange drawings which were letters from the ancient Egyptian alphabet. She then asked us to write our names using the drawings we thought corresponded with the letters. And, of course, we were all wrong. She then told us what the hieroglyphics represented, some were strange sounds and some represented several letters.
We also looked at old writing from a report about flooding on the south coast in 1824 which described the devastation in great detail. Then we looked at what was probably the last entry in Nelson’s diary dated 21 October 1805, the day he was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Maureen and Jane look hope to see you all again and look forward to welcoming new members to the group. This is your History Group, so please let us have your ideas for subjects for future meetings and outside visits.
