Gardening Group
Happy Gardening New Year to all our regular attenders and a warm welcome to new members and those members of Hucknall U3A who receive our communications but are not able to squeeze us in on the third Tuesday of each month.
Our first meeting of 2015 will be on Tuesday 20th January, 2.00 at The John Godber Centre on Ogle Street. Various activities have been planned including a gardening quiz. On that day we will also be taking bookings for our visit to Ashby Bluebell Arboretum ( would you believe it) on Tuesday Feb 17th so bring your cheque book or purse. March 17th more restful with a talk by a well know Radio Nottingham contributor, Stewart Dixon.

Out in the garden the hellebores are looking promising with really large flower buds. Fresher and greener than ever but a few of them have dark spots so to be on the safe side I am taking advice and removing all the leaves with spots on, cutting them close to the ground or even pulling them off. I’ve been sorting out my spuds in the garage and getting rid of those rotten ones plus taking off the growing shoots on the spuds that seem to think its spring. I am having a go at putting some of the earlies with shoots on in 2 large spud bags and covering them with a mixture of compost and soil just to see if we can have new potatoes for Easter this year.
For all you real nature lovers did you know that January 21st is Squirrel Appreciation Day and as we keep being told that red squirrels are making a come back keep your eyes open and let us know if you see any. According to the telly they seem to be breeding well on the Fylde coast – always been a sexy place, Blackpool.
And here are some real good gardening songs for our bus trips out this year:-
Elvis – Greenhouse Rock Cyndi Lauper – Girls just want to have Fungi
Abba – The Winner Rakes it all Ray Charles – Hit the Hose Jack
Wings – Mulch of Kintyre Righteous Brothers – You’ve lost that lovely seedling
Carly Simon – You’re so Vine Pink Floyd – Another Alpine in the Wall.
